Between March and June 2024, Trust Utility Management worked on a project within Woodthorpe Grange Park, on behalf of Nottingham City Council.
Woodthorpe Grange Park is one of the largest green spaces in Nottingham. Within the park is a Grade II listed manor house, formal flower gardens, a tropical house and plant nursery. Covering 52 acres, the park is a popular destination for walkers and cyclists.
In 2023, the park received a Green Flag award in recognition of its high standard of maintenance, so it was important for us to be sensitive to the natural environment while completing the works. Trust have constructed a 1,700 square metre footpath through the park, lined with timber edgings.
To preserve the green landscape and prevent any damage to the trees and shrubbery running parallel to the new footpath, Trust have utilised Cellweb technology for the first time. Cellweb is a breathable, water-permeable layer that sits beneath the tarmac. This allows existing tree roots to remain undisturbed by the construction works as they can continue to draw water and nutrients from the ground, even with a tarmac layer sitting above.
Given the scale of the project, Trust provided Nottingham City Council with a dedicated team of operatives over a 14-week period. As well as focusing on the environmental impact of the works, another great emphasis has been on SLG compliance and maintenance. As Woodthorpe Grange Park is a public space, pedestrian footfall is high, particularly over weekends and bank holidays. Similarly, cyclists routinely travel through the park, presenting another hazard. To ensure works ran smoothly and safely, having a strong operational management presence was key.
Now that the works are finished, we are extremely proud of the final results!
